AREA Nightclub 'AREA IN THE DARK' Invite. 1987

AREA Nightclub 'AREA IN THE DARK' Invite. 1987
This is one of the best AREA invites that I’ve handled. I cannot find any example of this documented anywhere online. Very rare.
At first glance, it appears to be a small piece of paper with some discoloration but it is actually a glow-in-the-dark invitation to one of AREA’s last parties in 1987.
The glow of the glow-in-the-dark text has faded over time, so the text is only visible at an angle under light. The text reads:
OPENING NIGHT
AREA IN THE DARK
01.07.87
I love this piece because it is a great example of AREA’s ingenious invitations but mostly because of how unassuming it is and how it needs to be held and seen IRL to understand what it actually is.
If you’re on this page, you likely know about AREA.
AREA was one of the most important clubs of the ‘80s - Basquiat frequented along with Madonna, Warhol, Grace Jones, etc. and they were known for their innovative approach to running a nightclub business - investing in elaborate invitations and changing the decor of the club every 6 weeks.
Shipped with AREA branded envelope.
