Herman Miller - Dealer NEWS July/August 1980
An exceedingly rare example of Herman Miller’s internal communications.
Herman Miller was not only prescient in their design, but also how they operated. They maintained robust internal communications and often non-traditional ways of working.
This dealer catalog was distributed only to select Herman Miller dealers.
The cover design brilliantly features a xerox scan of an impromptu arrangement of Herman Miller fabric threads from a Herman Miller employee:
“On the cover:
A sample of one of our new fabrics was unnoticed on the work surface — unnoticed until a member of Herman Miller’s Corporate Communications Design and Development group got her hands on it.
She began playing with it, pulling it from corner-to-corner, and side-to-side. One strand started to unravel; she started the process until a ball of kinky strands replaced the piece of cloth.
Out of design curiosity, she xeroxed those threads; the outcome was good. And when she enlarged it, we were convinced that it was cover ‘material’.
We’ve inked the strands on the cover similarly to one of our new fabrics: wool tweed, 5003, chocolate/brown.”
This issue also has images from NEOCON XII Conference, new hires, a piece on Herman Miller’s Time Sharing program, and new fabric announcements.
Very rare. This is the only copy I’ve ever seen come to market.
