Louise Lawler - Untitled, Black / White - $100 copy
An outstanding artists book from Louise Lawler, who is one of the most under-appreciated artists of the last 75 years.
The book is part of two bookworks self-published by Lawler in 1978. The book loosely reproduces a screenplay by Metro Pictures’ founder, Janelle Reiring. The screenplay is abut the death of a Dutch exotic dancer and suspected spy Mata Hari, who was executed by firing squad in Fance.
The book ends with the words ‘A BLACK SCREEN; THE SOUND OF A GUNSHOT.’
Perhaps more interestingly, the inside cover notes two potential prices for the book - $4.95 and $100. This gesture questions the intrinsic value of an artists’ work and the structure of the art market - a recurring theme for Lawler. Here, the more expensive price is circled - $100.
Book shows some minor scuffing but is in excellent shape.
Very rare and an important work of the Pictures Generation.
